Frequently Asked Questions

Kefir is a fermented food or drink made using live cultures of beneficial bacteria and yeasts. Milk kefir is made using milk kefir grains or a kefir starter culture, while water kefir is made using water kefir grains.

Kefir grains are living cultures made up of bacteria and yeasts that work together to ferment milk or sugar water. Despite their name, kefir grains are not actual grains such as wheat, rice, or oats.

The taste depends on the type of milk or ingredients used and how long the kefir is fermented. Milk kefir usually has a naturally tangy or sour taste, with the flavour becoming stronger with longer fermentation.

Add your milk kefir grains to fresh milk and allow them to ferment at room temperature. Once the fermentation is complete, strain the grains and use them again with fresh milk. Detailed instructions are provided with Kelifta orders.

Milk kefir generally takes around 8–24 hours, depending on temperature, the amount of grains, the type of milk, and your preferred taste and consistency.

Yes. One of the main advantages of live kefir grains is that they can be reused repeatedly when properly cared for. The grains may also grow and multiply over time.

With proper care, milk kefir grains can continue to be used for a very long time. Regular feeding, suitable milk, hygiene, and proper storage help maintain healthy grains.

Kelifta recommends suitable dairy milk for milk kefir grains. Avoid ultra-pasteurised/UHT milk, as it may not provide the best conditions for the grains.

We do not recommend regularly using milk kefir grains with plant-based milk, as this may affect the health and activity of the grains. For plant-based milks such as coconut, soy, and oat milk, we recommend using a powdered kefir starter culture instead.

Kelifta does not guarantee consistent results with lactose-free milk. If you are unsure which milk to use, we recommend following the milk guidelines provided with your order.

Water kefir is a fermented drink made using water kefir grains, water, and sugar. The grains ferment the sugar solution to create a naturally refreshing fermented beverage.

Yes. Water kefir grains can be reused for multiple batches when properly cared for. They may also grow and multiply over time.

The sugar used can affect the fermentation process and the health of the grains. Kelifta's recommended brewing ingredients can be used according to the instructions provided with the product.

Kefir starter culture is a powdered culture used to make kefir without maintaining traditional kefir grains. It is a convenient option for beginners and for making kefir with certain plant-based milks.

Yes, starter culture can be reused for a limited number of batches. Unlike kefir grains, however, it will eventually lose its ability to culture and will need to be replaced. Kelifta's existing guidance indicates that it can often be reused for around 10 batches, depending on freshness and hygiene.

Not necessarily. Kelifta's live grains are transported in conditions intended to help them remain viable during transit. After delivery, the grains may need some time to adjust and become fully active again. This may take 1–2 days or a few batches, depending on transit conditions.

Follow the activation and brewing instructions provided with your order. Avoid making changes to the process during the initial activation period unless advised by Kelifta.

Contact Kelifta as soon as possible with your order details and clear photographs or videos of the product and packaging. Eligible live products are covered by Kelifta's replacement guarantee for transit-related damage or loss of activity, subject to the applicable conditions.
